Kabaddi: The Traditional Sport of South Asia Forging Its Identity on the Global Stage
Kabaddi, once considered merely a traditional sport of villages and towns across South Asia, is rapidly forging its identity on the international stage. The greatest feature of this sport is that it requires no equipment whatsoever—no ball, no bat, no special field. Just a marked area, two teams of seven players each, and the art of chanting 'kabaddi-kabaddi' continuously in a single breath while entering the opponent's territory, tagging players, and returning to one's own side. This simplicity is the sport's greatest strength, which has made it popular worldwide.
The history of kabaddi is centuries old. It is believed that the roots of this sport go back to the Mahabharata era, inspired by the formation of the Chakravyuha and the bravery of Abhimanyu. Traditionally, it has been played in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. But the real change came in the 1990s when kabaddi was included as an official sport in the 2026 Asian Games. After this, the first Kabaddi World Cup was held in 2026, and the launch of the professional Kabaddi League in India in 2026 completely changed the picture of this sport.
The Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) gave this sport a new life. With television broadcasts, franchise-based models, branding of star players, and the arrival of big sponsors, kabaddi not only moved from villages to cities but also opened a new career option for the youth. Today, kabaddi players are auctioned for crores of rupees, and its viewership on TV ranks second only to cricket.
At the international level, India has been the strongest contender in kabaddi. The Indian team has won consecutive gold medals in the Asian Games and has maintained its dominance in the World Cup as well. However, countries like Iran, Bangladesh, South Korea, and Kenya have also developed strong teams, making the competition more exciting than ever before. Iran has given India tough competition in Asian Games and other tournaments in recent years, and has even defeated it on several occasions.
A major reason for kabaddi's popularity is its simple and fast-paced format. A raid lasts only 30 seconds, and the raider must hold their breath and continuously chant 'kabaddi.' If they breathe, they are considered out. This rule creates a unique tension and excitement in the game that keeps viewers glued to the screen. Besides this, rules like tackle, super raid, super tackle, and do-or-die make the game even more interesting.
In recent years, several important changes have been seen in kabaddi. Women's kabaddi is now gaining recognition at the international level, and initiatives like the Women's Pro Kabaddi League are providing a platform for female players as well. Along with this, there has been a continuous demand to include kabaddi in the Olympic Games. The International Kabaddi Federation (IKF) is working in this direction, although inclusion in the Olympics requires the sport to meet several criteria, including expanding global participation and popularity.
The future of kabaddi looks bright. A sport that was once played in the soil of villages is today a professional sport with international tournaments, television broadcasts, and sponsorships worth crores of rupees. There are challenges too—increasing popularity globally, developing infrastructure in other countries, and securing Olympic recognition for the sport. But if the current momentum continues, kabaddi may soon establish its place among the world's most popular sports.
